Journey of Discovery

Today was my sixth physical therapy session, I think. I stopped counting after the first three. This is the first time I’ve ever had physical therapy for anything and boy is it a process. I’m on a quest to find out what is causing me to have constant headaches and frequent migraines for the past year and a half. I’ve been having them for so long it was hard to stop and realize that it wasn’t normal. Within the last two months the throbbing pain was so frequent and intense that it got my attention in a big way.

You may be asking, how can headaches and migraines not get my attention for approximately a year and a half? I would answer by saying I got caught up in the daily routine of my life. I started to accept that I was supposed to feel like I did. I was in a semi-bad mood, taking Advil, and trying to cope all the time. It became the norm.

For two-weeks straight I had a headache when I woke up in the morning and migraines that started shortly after almost every day. For years I have had tension in my neck and shoulders and I am convinced that is the source of the headaches. I found a physical therapist by using Google to do a little research. A typical session starts with the physical therapist asking me about the headaches/pain, the frequency of the headaches/pain, and what I am doing when the headaches/pain starts. The PT then begins to relieve the tension and pressure. Almost like a massage but not quite. The PT says for me, nerves cause the tension and it was unlikely that it could be relieved with just a massage.

I’ve had six physical therapy sessions and I am having some success. I wake up headache free and I have approximately one headache a week. I’m not totally in the clear yet, but I feel the healing. I’m going to give therapy another month or so to get me headache free before I move on to my next pursuit for a cure. I’m thinking acupuncture.
