Oh. My. God. Where do I start? [I’m throwing a dart. Here goes.]
I was driving behind a car the other day and one of the bumper stickers caught my eye. It read, “If you think health care is expensive now – wait til it’s free!” An older man was driving the car and the passenger was an older woman (probably his wife), they turned into a church parking lot and I kept driving while shaking my head. I was saying to myself “is that really what Jesus would say?” Surely that’s not what the church is teaching, is it?
Statements like the one on that bumper sticker always make me want to see the person bold enough to put that out for public view. Some people believe that whatever your circumstances you brought it on yourself. That may be true, but does that mean that innocent children should be made to suffer. I’m not advocating that the people in that car can save the world. But I am saying that all of us have a responsibility not to hinder progress and for goodness sake practice being empathic. All it would take to know that the bumper sticker statement is false is a little reading. But I guess that guy would rather the uninsured keep going to the emergency room so he can keep footing the bill. Sad thing is he doesn’t even know he’s paying.
Here comes the pro-life crowd. The zealots that don’t understand that life does not consist of different degrees/levels. Life is pure and simply life. So, if republicans are in favor of life then they should be in favor of the quality of life for everyone. But their policies say otherwise. I have never been able to understand how republicans are pro-life, but in favor of cuts in health care, starting unnecessary wars, and eliminating nutritional programs in schools. And don’t forget being pro-death penalty.
Republicans are also for the right to own assault weapons/firearms without closing background check loopholes. That means that the mentally ill can potentially get their hands on firearms. We have seen the unstable get access to weapons time and again because of these loopholes, case in point Virginia Tech and the shooting in Arizona, where one of the victims was a child.
Being pro life, bible, and America must make you compassionate too. So why would you be against affordable health care for everyone? Why would you be for cutting funding for education and ending Medicare? What about jobs? Republicans used the surplus left by the Clinton Administration to give tax cuts to the rich and start a war in Iraq. This led us into a deficit and for eight years they were only concerned with more spending. Now they want us to believe that they care about balancing the budget all the while they are still protecting the wealthiest people in the country. I’m just saying that maybe if you claim to love America so much you might feel like the well being of the poorest in our country was a priority. It’s just a thought.
P.S. For the love of God, stop voting against your own economic interests. It’s STUPID!
